High Holidays at Emory

Hillel at Emory works hard to meet the religious needs of Jewish students during the High Holidays and to make the holidays engaging and meaningful for students away from home.

As these holidays generally take place at the beginning of each school year they can cause a significant amount of academic stress, especially on freshmen.
NOTE TO STUDENTS: To avoid some of the pitfalls with academic conflicts during the holidays, please discuss your needs with your professors as soon as you receive your syllabi. While professors are not obligated to excuse absences, they generally will work with you. Please contact Hillel at 404-963-2548 if a conflict remains unresolved after you have attempted to resolve the conflict on your own.

Services

Hillel offers Reform and Conservative services on both Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, as well as Orthodox services on Rosh Hashanah. All services are open to Emory students at no charge, but require signing up in advance. Faculty and members of the Atlanta Jewish community and guests are welcome to purchase tickets to attend services. A full schedule of services is available here.

If you are looking to attend a synagogue in the Greater Atlanta community, here are a few options to consider.

Leadership

  • Conservative Services: Rabbi Marshall Lesack, ordained from the Jewish Theological Seminary, is the Assistant Director of Camp Ramah Darom. We welcome him as our guest rabbi for his third year on our bimah. Laura Levine, our cantorial soloist, is a music and tefilah specialist at The Epstein School Solomon Schechter School of Atlanta.
  • Reform Services: Rabbi Micah Lapidus, who is leading Reform High Holiday services for the third year, is Director of Judaic and Hebrew Studies at The Alfred and Adele Davis Academy.

Holiday Meals

Hillel serves dinner on Rosh Hashannah after services and a meal after Yom Kippur to break the fast.

  • Rosh Hashanah Meal: Following services, enjoy a festive meal at the Marcus Hillel Center at 8:15 PM. SPACE IS LIMITED - RSVP REQUIRED - REGISTER HERE
  • Yom Kippur Break-Fast Meal: After a day of rigorous repenting, break the fast at Hillel with a carb-rich meal. The fast ends at 8:18 PM. If you're late, we'll save you a plate. Suggested donation of $5. RSVP not required.

Sponsorships

Hillels of Georgia needs your help to ensure that we can continue to offer High Holiday services for our students, faculty, and Atlanta Jewish community members. There are various sponsorship opportunities available for you to make your tax-deductible contribution.
